Divorce not final in California on Dec 31, can I file single?

If divorce or legal separation is not final on Dec 31st in California is filing single an option if no dependents?

No.  Your only options are Married Filing Jointly (MFJ), if you can agree to do so, or Married Filing Separately (MFS)

If I can claim a dependent head of household would be a filing option correct?

If I can claim a qualifying* dependent,  head of household (HOH) would be a filing option; but only if you and your spouse did not live together at any time after July 1, 2019.

 

*Your dependent must be closely related.
