You indicated that you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment so the Recovery Rebate Credit of $1,400 was entered on your federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 30. The IRS has records showing that you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $1,400 credit.
Do you have an amount on 1040 line 30 for the Recovery rebate credit? Did you not get the 3rd Stimulus payment? Or qualify for more? Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.
If you claimed a missing stimulus payment on your return but the IRS took it off you have to ask the IRS. They think they already sent it to you. Maybe it went to an account you don't remember. Or you got a check or a card. It was probably easy to miss the debit card in the mail and think it was junk mail. They have to put a trace on it.
Double check your bank statements and Check your IRS account to see when and what they sent you (check both spouse's accounts if married)

Request a trace for a missing third Stimulus payment
I was never asked by turbo tax about my stimulus payment
I was asked if I received a 4th stimulus payment which I thought was weird even texted my friend to ask ..cause I thought that was an odd question
If that's the case why would they take $1400 from me? Instead of kicking out my return
Now they are taking my regular tax return. Once again I was never asked about my third payment when fing with turbo tax they just filled that form on their own
money? Makes no since? So I need to amend my return?
I was never asked by turbo tax about my 3rd stimulus payment
They asked if I received a 4th stimulus payment which I answered no
Why would they take 1400 either way? Your taking my regular amount of tax return money? Why wouldn't they just kick it out?
TurboTax asks about the 3rd stimulus payment received as part of the calculation of the Recovery Rebate Credit. This credit is for taxpayers who did not receive all or some of the payment in 2021. You are required to report if you received any money.
In the interview, TurboTax does not automatically populate the amount you received for the 3rd stimulus payment. Instead, it assumes your payment amount is $0 (since the box is empty until you populate it) and estimates the full amount included in your refund. When you complete the box with the amount you already received, it is merely removing that amount from your refund to properly reflect that you already received. If you did not enter this information prior to filing your return, the IRS will adjust your return based on their records of payment.
There has not been a 4th stimulus yet. It was asking if you got the 3rd Stimulus. You should have said yes and entered the amount you got, probably 1,400. If you had 1400 on line 30 you tried to get it again. You should have seen this screen.
Then you would get this screen. to enter the amount you already got.
There has not been a 4th stimulus payment as of yet.
The TurboTax program asks if you received the 3rd payment.
If you selected "No" the program would have added the 1400 to your refund.
Since you DID get the 3rd payment, the IRS adjusted your return.
So none of these answers have read my responses
It still doesn't mean you can take 1400 back from my return
You would still give me my regular tax return amount
You wouldn't just take that amount of money
You would not accept my federal return because it was wrong ...none of these answers you guys are giving make any since
Why would they take the money even if I had gotten it
And yes if you did your taxes at the beginning turbo tax asked if you received a 4th stimulus check ...this was definitely something wrong with the software and now thousands of people are out of money ...but it still doesn't explain why you would take that amount away and not just give you your original tax return amount?
Then they still owe me my regular amount of tax money...you don't just remove money ..you would not accept it and amend it, I would still receive my regular amount of tax return??
The IRS took 1400 away from you because the IRS says they already sent you the 1400 separately last year. If you didn't get a deposit for it you have to get the IRS to put a Trace for the missing amount.

I think what she's trying to say is that even though they sent it previously, why are they making her pay it back if they didn't send it again? She was eligible to receive it. I'm dealing with the same thing. My 2021 and 2022 refunds have both been absorbed by the IRS to pay a $1400 balance for the economic impact credit. I received only the primary credit of $1400 that I was eligible for. I could understand if by me saying I hadn't received it and then received it again, me paying it back would make sense. But why would I have to pay the full amount back just because I didn't say I received it? It's bs.
There is only one 1400 per person credit for the 3rd Stimulus payment. If you didn't get it or qualify for more (like if you had a baby or added a dependent) you claim it as the Recovery Rebate Credit on 1040 line 30. It's for the same credit. You said you already got the primary credit. That was it. You only get 1. You tried to claim it again on line 30. So the IRS took it off your return.
They took from me also, $1400 from last year. And I never received the $600 stimulus. For one they should not be asking about stimulus as a question when we file. The IRS is taking back what they gave us and being sneaky about it. Bad enough that they take out Federal, social security and Medicare! And then we receive crap when we file!!!!!
@Lelela12 The $600 stimulus payment was for tax year 2020, not 2021.
For tax year 2021 -
If your refund is short $1,400 then that is because you said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment and the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.
Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you are Married Filing Jointly also check your spouse's tax account.
If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $1,400 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-payment-issued-but-lost-stolen-destroyed-or-not-received
I still don’t understand why I would owe $1400 unless they gave it to me twice. I worked all year 2021 and had taxes taken from my paycheck. Even if I did say I didn’t receive the $1400, I was only expecting $328 back, which was applied to a $1400 balance. Then this year when I filed 2022 I was expecting $998 back, which was applied to the balance. How can I owe $1400 back unless I received it twice? It doesn’t make sense. The website doesn’t give me any info as to why I have the balance and I waited on hold for 90 minutes to speak to an agent and when I finally got someone they disconnected me. Removing a $1400 credit shouldn’t mean I owe $1400. I’m literally paying back the one $1400 EIP I received.
No it is not taxed and you don't have to pay it back. What happened was that on your 2021 tax return you tried to claim it again but already got it so the IRS took it off your return. Check your 1040 line 30 for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.
They are not taking it away from you. They just took it off your 1040 return line 30. It shouldn't have been there in the first place. So cross out line 30 and refigure the math without it,
But my expected refund for 2021 taxes when I filed last year was only $328, which they applied toward the $1400 balance. I don’t see where the $1400 works into that. Like if I said I didn’t receive the $1400, shouldn’t I have been expecting $1728 back when I filed? And then when they saw I did in fact receive the EIP give me only the $328? I just don’t understand how removing the credit when I didn’t receive the $1400 again makes sense. Again I am referring to 2021 when this all started. I have never owed money. I work a 9-5, taxes are taken, I have no additional untaxed income and I’ve always gotten money back from filing until this started in 2021.
And it’s not that my refund is short $1400, the IRS is forcing me to pay it back by taking my $328 from 2021 and my $998 from 2022 and demanding I pay another $182 (includes interest I’m guessing) at no point did me saying I didn’t receive it put ANY additional money in my pocket. Never in my life have I owed money to the IRS until last year.
You need to contact the IRS to find out why you are having to pay these taxes.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
Or you can contact your local IRS office. See this IRS website for local IRS offices - http://www.irs.gov/uac/Contact-Your-Local-IRS-Office-1 or call 1-844-545-5640 to set up an appointment
Or you may want to contact a Taxpayer Advocate in your area. See this IRS website for Taxpayer Advocate in your area and a toll free number - http://www.irs.gov/Advocate/Local-Taxpayer-Advocate
Thank you, I will try this. I know speaking to the IRS is the best way to know for sure why this is happening. It’s just that after calling them and spending 90 minutes on hold to be disconnected by an agent I was so frustrated that I just came back to this forum. I can’t be sure that these are the prompts that I chose when I called, but I will give it a shot.
