intuit turbotax has made poor decisions in the past that have been reversed, because customers would not stand for it. Discontinuing the CD version of turbo tax will not be tolerated by many customers and it will cost turbotax more than they plan on saving. I am asking turbotax to reverse this poorly thought out decision to discontinue the CD version and only offering downloads. I personally will not purchase a download and I am sure they lose many current and future customers, because of this decision.
Your opinion is noted, the company has already made a decision, and I suspect it is too late to master CDs and get them into stores even if there was a massive wave of complaints.
In case you didn't know, the downloaded program is the exact same software as the CD version. The downloadable version is not crippled or different in any way. (The online-only version is very different, of course, but that's not what we are talking about.) The CD is just a delivery system. And, because the CD is mastered before the tax forms are finalized, even if you buy a CD, you always have to do one or more full downloads to update the software before you can file. So the only thing that is changing is the method of putting that first, unfinished copy on your computer.
We also believe (but have not 100% confirmed) that Turbotax boxes will still be sold in stores, like Staples, Costco, and Target. The box will contain a code for a pre-paid download, rather than a physical CD, but you will still be able to use sales, coupons or other discounts in-store.
well then you are going to either have to use an online version or use a pro. Others are also no longer offering a CD for 2024
No. It's the exact same program. The CD also is a download. The CD downloads the program. Now a link downloads the program. There is nothing really on the CD. You also always download the updates or the states you need.
I have always had to download th Mac version of the software, whether I bought a "box "from Staples, Target or another source.
you do realize that all updates which are required come via download. what's the difference? It may be true that other app providers are also discontinuing CDs. There are many online apps available.
I am highly disappointed with the decision as well. I am disgusted with the current system in place and wish to do it like past years. As a long time user of TT, I am not questioning my loyalty and I am in search of other vendors.
@cashpenny Why do you need the CD?
For 2024 they are only selling the download, no CDs. And if you have a Mac you need Ventura 13 Or newer

Even if you bought the CD before you could use the download method to install it. I always bought the CD from Costco. But last year for 2023 I bought the download from Costco online. Installed it real fast. It was the same as the CD. Most of the laptops and computers now don't have a CD drive. And I had to get a new laptop with Windows 10 to run Turbo Tax starting for 2022.
The confusion is that the Online version is NOT the Download program. The Download program is EXACTLY the same Desktop program as the CD. You buy it the same way directly from Turbo Tax or in stores like Costco. When you installed the CD you still had to go online to update it. It's only the method you use to install it. Even when I bought the CD I used the download method to install it.
I really like the option to purchase Turbo Tax on CD as if computer has a hard drive failure and I need to replace it, I can just load the CD and move on.
I have been purchasing the CD for Years!
No question. I have used the Turbo and CD copies of the program each year. I tried online version and there was too much room for error and losing info. And not saving the work properly for when you return. The CD version provides more control in following the trek through the whole program.
Thanks for raising the topic and concern.
@massachusetts1 Did you see my post up above?

I see the posts.
I appreciate there are others who value the CD version. But I hear you all about how CD functions with Download of updates, vs. Online version. I think that's what I understand.
Bottom line - I don't like too much change. And I like having the CD disc just in case. That's all I know.
You'll get used to it. It will be ok. Even if you bought the CD before you could use the download method to install it. I always bought the CD from Costco. You can burn the .exe file to make your own CD or copy it to a usb or external drive.
In my Windows Download folder it is called
Windows_PC_TurboTax_Downloadx.exe (2023 download I bought from Costco)
Windows_PC_TurboTax_Download.exe (2022 downloaded from TT from Costco CD)
This is a good tip by both of you. Thanks!
A significant influence for my concerns is my experience with my External BackUp Drives. The online or cloud spaces don't sync as I want with my actual PC files. It's difficult to sync them accurately. I feel no control over the backups. I like backing up from computer (any file or all in File Explorer) directly to my External Drive and not through internet app or cloud for the external backup drive.
Even Google Drive doesn't "sync" accurately, or at least how I would want it to.
Anyway, you've all been very helpful and validating.
you'll be downloading the installations filed which can be backed up to an external drive. i did this when I use to get the CD version because they can and do go bad. After 3 more tax years the download will no longer be available and you won't be able to reinstall from the backup drive. The same would be true if you had the CD because Turbotax stops supporting older versions of its software. for example 2019 can no longer be reinstalled. Even if you had 2019 installed on a second drive, you'll get an error message when trying to open it.
@Mike9241 Good point about the 3 years now. I'll add that to my notes. You can only install and update the last 3 years.
@Anonymous_ BUT going forward it will be the same for 2020 ->.
I have used both. experienced major issues with download version. Quit and went back to CD. ALL WAS WELL UNTIL TURBOTAX MADE RECENT PROGRAMING CHANGES AND NOW I CANT'T ENTER BUSINESS EXPENSES RELATED TO A FORM 1099-C. One week from the extended 2023 due date!! NOT A GOOD TURBOTAX EXPERIENCE!!!
@wmpyoungx I think you meant that you need to complete a Schedule C for your self-employment income and expenses, not a 1099-C
I am using the 2023 Premier Edition desktop for Windows and found this workaround.
When the program asks if you received a Form 1099-K answer Yes. On the 1099-K enter any name for the Payer, any 9 digits for the Payer ID and then enter $1 in box 1a. Click on Continue and click on Done.
This will take you back to the Form 1099-MISC question and answer NO. Click on Continue.
You will now be back at the Form 1099-K Summary screen. Click on the BACK button. You can now continue the interview for the Schedule C.
The TurboTax desktop edition on a CD is just a piece of plastic that has the beta version of the TurboTax program. Once the CD is installed then ALL of the many updates to the desktop software that was installed from the CD are Downloads.
I have used the TurboTax desktop editions for at least the last 25 years, ALL as a download.
If you used the Turbotax Desktop version you did a download. The CD was just a shell of the program which you registered and downloaded the guts of the software
Thanks. 1099-C was a typo. I meant the expenses related to income reported on 1099-NEC. The problem was that the expense couldn't be input because of the programming glitch with respect to subsequent required 1099-MISC and 1099-K responses. No responses placed the user into perpetual circle, preventing input of business expenses related to Schedule C.
Your suggested work-around worked for my Advantage Deluxe edition a few days later. Thanks. I put in a dummy 1099-K for $0.48 of income and followed your directions:
"When the program asks if you received a Form 1099-K answer Yes.
You can now continue the interview for the Schedule C."
IT WORKED! Thanks!
Just to say I've been following and appreciate all that has been shared.
I have completed the 2023 Return late last week and very relieved. And then took a break.
Not sure I've mentioned before - even having the CD I am asked to update each time I open up the program to continue working with it. Obviously, those updates are downloading via the internet from Turbo, I assume.
The references to a saved copy in our computer file is helpful and that is the copy I like to open up from and work with. I've noticed there can be different copies saved in files that are close in time on same date. I'll choose the last time or the file that is the largest to continue working with.
Also, there is the avenue of opening my program from the Turbo icon on my desktop. So if there are a couple of copies saved that are close in time, I have thought if I click the Desktop Icon, I'm not sure which saved copy opens.
I'm getting into picayune area, but it just conveys some of the doubt I have in not having a CD in hand.
So you can basically ignore my post.
My intent is to express thanks for the discussion and ideas. And I would still agree with those who prefer to have a CD.
What can I say? I still don't fully accept downloading music from internet. I prefer CD's and using a disc player (and still have audiotapes of the past). If I download into phone or computer, I don't trust it will be there forever. I "burn" from computer to a recordable CD.
Thanks again.
If you check everyone is going to Download so even if you found a CD for 2024 from another company then by 2025 it will be Download. It is the times.
My concern is with CD I could install in my laptop also to work on stuff on the road. So will I be able to download to multiple devices at no additional cost?
Also will I still get 5 free Federal filings
