Deceased person tax return

I do my mothers tax return every year with turbotax.  My mom passed last week and I have not submitted 2023's tax return yet.  Since we are into 2024 I assume I will need to file taxes for her in 2025 making this not her final return to be submitted.  How do I sign and submit 2023's return?

I also would like to know if I am expected to hold onto her submitted tax documents for 7 years?

When you log in to do her taxes for 2023 (and for 2024 if she has enough earnings to require her to file) TurboTax will ask if the taxpayer is deceased and you will answer 'yes'.  There are a few other questions about whether you have the authority to file the return on her behalf and whatnot.

The biggest thing is that if she has a refund you may be required to mail in the return along with copies of the paperwork showing that you have been appointed as her executor - if that is the case.

You should save all tax paperwork for 7 years to be on the safe side.  Nothing older than that is necessary.  So as of April 15th of this year you can get rid of everything from 2016 and back.
