companies refuse to issue correction to 1099

Two companies issued 1099 misc that are incorrect as they reported my income in box 7 instead of 3. Im the widow/beneficiary of a deceased insurance agent. The IRS wants to charge me self employment taxes in addition to regular income taxes on the total $5600 from the two companies. How do I proceed as the IRS told me to get corrections for 2017?

It is difficult in a tax program to explain reporting document errors.

One method might be to include the amount on a Schedule C and then expense it to "Deceased employee's wages". Include the amount in Other Income and tag it with the same explanation.

It may work by doing this. You may get a call from IRS. If you do, you can explain the circumstances at that time.
