If you are using TurboTax online you will need to make a manual adjustment for the Clergy Housing Allowance.  You will enter your Housing Allowance as a negative number (minus sign first, for example -15,000) on Line 21, Other Income.

Please follow the instructions below:

  • Choose the Federal return and the Wages & Income tab.
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income and Show more.
  • Choose Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C.
  • Choose Other Reportable Income and say Yes.
  • On the screen that says "Do not enter income reported on Form 1099-MISC",  you will enter the description "Clergy Housing Allowance Deduction" the amount you received (as a negative number), and who received it, if necessary.

Your step by step was perfect. My question is: When did this become the process for entering the Housing Allowance? I've been in ministry and receiving housing allowance for the past several years and this is the first year I have had to enter it this way. Ordinarily, it would deduct automatically after entering the amount in the "qualifying expenses" box, but it was not doing that this time.
