Class Action Settlement - Hale V State Farm

I received a settlement check for the Class Action Suit known as Hale v State Farm.

I did not receive a 1099-MISC -- the administrator of the class action said no 1099 forms would be issued. I found another post that said to pretend you have a 1099-MISC and enter the info and the amount would fall into other income and be counted. But the TurboTax software requires an EIN for the 1099-MISC entry and I don't have one and I don't know how to find one. Any thoughts on how I get by this or if I should be treating this money differently.

Thanks.

Cindy

No, you don't have to enter a 'pretend 1099-Misc' to report this income as 'Other Income'.

Under Wages & Income, scroll down to 'Less Common Income', then 'Miscellaneous Income', then 'Other Reportable Income'.

You can type in your own description.

I would take the position that since no 1099's were issued even if the award was over $600, it is not taxable.

here's some info

Awards are being provided to Class Members who were insured by State Farm and had non-OEM crash parts installed on or specified for their vehicles (or received compensation based on the value of those parts) between July 28, 1987, and February 24, 1998.
