Checked/redone my w2 multiple times, but still getting an error for Utah form "tc-40w" saying withholding id number must be 14 characters. My number is 11779759002WTH.

Tried lower cast wth, deleted and started over, tried all suggestions found online (clearing cache/cookies even).

I can make several suggestions:

  • Clear the ID number and leave it blank.
  • Replace the number with the Federal ID (I know it's not 17 character).
  • Delete the entire W-2, and re-enter it

On the menu bar on the left.

  1. On the left sidebar
  2. Select Tax Tools
    1. You may have to minimize tabs for
    2. Federal & State
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form
  5. This will give you all of the forms in your return
  6. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  7. Select the W-2 Form that applies
  8. Click on Delete.

Now re-post the W-2 manually.

  1. Under Federal
  2. Click Wages & Income a menu will appear.
  3. Click the down arrow on Wages & Salaries
  4. Select Wages & Salaries W-2
  5. We'll start with your W-2 select
    1. Work on my W-2
  6. Enter the employer ID from your W-2 - get this number from your W-2
  7. How would you like to add your W-2?
    1. At the bottom of the screen select [Type it in Myself]
  8. OK, let's review your form and fill in any missing info
    1. Enter your employers information.
  9. Let's review the rest
    1. Enter your W-2.
  10. Continue the interview.
