Canadian working in the US

Hi, A friend of mine is a Canadian citizen with US green card and only working in the U.S. (W-2) and has only been in Canada for about 1 week for a visit in the past year. He has no income from Canada. He filed taxes in the U.S. Should he file taxes for Canada as well? Should he pay taxes to Canada for the income he already paid taxes in the U.S? tnx

It depends on whether the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has determined whether he has Resident or Non-Resident status.  If he has Resident status he will have to report his US income to Canada and pay Canadian tax on it.  He can claim a credit for foreign tax paid for the US tax paid.  If the CRA has determined he is a Non-Resident, he does not have to claim his US income. If he had take the actions necessary to become a non-resident he would most likely be aware of it.

I checked the website https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/information-been-moved/determining-your-residency-status.html

He doesn't have significant ties to Canada but he still holds Canadian passport. Is he non-resident or resident? Does he need to file taxes for Canada regardless of residency status?

Based on my very limited knowledge of Canadian tax, he should file a Canadian tax return.  That said, this is a US tax forum.  There is a TurboTax Community for Canadian tax.  I recommend you post your question there:  TurboTax Community - Canada
