Can't find the amt tax from a previous year?

TT gave me a AMT credit in 2019. I got audited this month (July 2022) and the IRS states that they have no record where I paid AMT.  I can't find it either. Is there somewhere in the code/forms that I just don't see where it indicates the year it is pulling that information from?

You may very well have to go back even further than 2015 (did you see an 8801 in your 2015 return package?).

Form 8801 is used for the credit/carryforward while Form 6251 is used to figure the amount of the AMT.

Yes, TT used 8801 in TY2019 to show that I had a credit, but it doesn't say from what year AMT was actually paid (it's rare for me, so I don't remember it).  Unless I can produce the 1040 that shows I paid AMT, I owe over $9500 in taxes and penalties.  I've gone back to 2015 and don't see where I have ever paid AMT.  I am sure in the code/file/dits-dots of the program, it will keep a tally of that credit and possibly the year, but I can't find it.  Both those forms have just the total, not the year it was pulled from.  Thanks!

For older returns, the AMT figure should be on Line 45 of your 1040 and you should also have a Form 6251.

@ordermyavon - to be clear, you are looking for Form 8801 CONSISTENTLY going back from 2019, as that is the form used to bring the credit foward each year.

if you can't find 8801 in 2018 (given the 2019 carryforward) then that in of itself is a problem.
