Can't file without Schedule C, but I don't need to file a Schedule C

I have one 1099-Misc for $22 in box 7 that came with instructions that I DO NOT need to file a schedule C to report this income. It is simply a report for legal benefits I have for being in a union. But in Turbo Tax, box 7 REQUIRES either Schedule C or F to be linked. Is there a way to override this? It won't let me file the return as is.

see if this works:

go back into step by step view and get back to this question:  5. How often did you get income for Legal Services Benefit

just answer 2018

then go to this question and place a zero as the response (don't leave it blank) :

9. Did you get cash or other income for Legal Services Benefit?

delete Schedule C -

I think that 2016-2019 question has a bug.  TT says it's just for naming convention on the 1040, but when I only clicked 2018, schedule C did not appear, but when i clicked all the years, schedule C does in fact appear.

if that doesn't work, delete 1099-MIsc, delete schedule C and then go back and fill in form 1099-Misc, adjusting your responses on the two questions I note above.

are you following the step x step process in TT?

shortly after you fill in Box 7, there should be two questions that appear asking whether the reason for the money involves "work" similar to your job and whether there was intent to earn money.   You should be answering 'no' to both questions.

Then the Schedule C won't be required.

  1. Thanks NCperson, but no, that didn't help. It is still connecting a schedule C, and when I delete schedule C, it then flags line 7 on the 1099-misc where I am required to fill out C or F.
  2. In the question "Does one of these uncommon situations apply?" I am checking, "This was commission, bonus, prize, award, etc. from a payer who was not my employer."
  3. In the question: "Did the Legal Service Benefit involve work that's like your main job?" I am checking, "No, it didn't involve work like my main job."

With that, it is still requiring a C or F. Any other thoughts you may have would be appreciated.

Why are you answering “yes” to the uncommon question? That is the problem

Are you using the CD or online version because I successfully had it working in the CD version as a scheudle C was NOT required

- delete the 1099 and reenter

- please post every question that pops up and every answer you provide

Let’s see what happens

I'm using the CD version--and it did an update today.

Here are the steps I just did with the same results:

1. Filled in the info from my 1099-MISC --Box 7 was the only box to write in $22.

2. Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC  -- Answer: Legal Services Benefit

3. Does one of these uncommon situations apply? -- Answer: None of these apply.

4. Did the legal Services Benefit involve work that's like your main job? -- Answer: No, it didn't involve work like my main job.

5. How often did you get income for Legal Services Benefit? -- Answer: I checked the boxes for 2016, 2017, 2018, and intending to get it in 2019.

6. Guess what? You can deduct expenses for legal services benefit work. -- No answer needed.

7. Let's confirm the reason for this income. This 1099-MISC had $22 in box 7. -- There were two options to choose from: 1. Legal service benefit from UAW, and 2. Legal services Benefit. I chose 2--and suspect 1 is from a previous time I put it in earlier today???

8. Did you get another 1099-MISC for Legal Service benefit. Answer: NO

9. Did you get cash or other income for Legal Services Benefit?  Answer: Left the box to fill in an amount of Cash or other income empty.

10. Did one of you get a 1099-MISC for a different reason? Answer: NO
