If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2023 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

In TurboTax Online, as long as you have not:

  1. submitted payment,
  2. deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or
  3. registered your product

You may erase your return and start from scratch in TurboTax Online. If you have done any of these things, you will need to manually edit your return.

To erase your return and start over in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return, if you haven’t already.
  2. Select Tax Tools from the left menu, then Clear & Start Over.
  3. Answer Yes to confirm.

See this TurboTax Help.

My son is filing his return using the TurboTax desktop version of the application.  He made some mistakes and would like to start it all over.  While we found instructions on how to clear the filing and start it over again online filing, we couldn't find instructions on how to clear the filing and start it over again with the Windows desktop filing.

Best regards,

@SukLingMurphy Save the current return with a unique name so you can delete it at a later date.

Click on File at the top left of the desktop program screen.

Click on Save As...

Then start a new tax return.

Click on File

Click on New Tax Return
