Can i use the free edition if i have a 1099misc but have a regular job as well? I have no other deductions than some charity. I rent and don't have any investment income.

I'm not self employed, regular W4 full time employee but have one 1099 misc for consulting I have done.

It seem unnecessary to get the self employed version.

No you cannot use the TurboTax Free online edition if you have income and expense from being self-employed. If you received a Form 1099-MISC with income shown in box 7 for consulting then you have a business.

You would need to upgrade to the Self-Employed online edition to report the income and expenses on a Schedule C.

Or you can switch to the TurboTax desktop editions since they all support Schedule C - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

Or if you qualify and can wait.....
There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like the full 1040 return and Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.

To qualify for the Tax Freedom website you just need to meet one of these 3 things
AGI $34,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $66,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)

In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website:
