Can I submit a letter to the IRS along with my return if I file electronically?

My financial institution neglected to withdraw my RMD from my inherited IRA before the end of 2021.  They are providing me with a letter saying that it was their fault.  How can I add the letter to my return when I file?

You cannot attach or submit the letter to your e-filed return.

If you missed a RMD, you should file form 5329 to request a waiver of the tax penalty. You must keep the letter from your financial institution in your tax files in case it is requested by the IRS.

To fill out form 5329:

  1. Open your return and click on Search on the top of your screen.
  2. In the Search box, type form 5329 and click on the magnifying glass icon on the right
  3. Click on the link Jump to form 5329
  4. TurboTax will take you to a section where you can fill out form 5329, which will be included in your tax return.
