Regardless if you were paid by cash or check, and you weren't considered an employee (on payroll and taxes were withheld from your wages), you are considered an independent contractor. Money earned as an independent contractor is considered self-employment income.

If you earned at least $400 in self-employment income after expenses are deducted, you are required to file a tax return. You would need to sign up for our TurboTax Self-Employed package to file your taxes. TurboTax Self-Employed will help guide you to be sure you report your income and expenses accurately.
