Can I get a tax refund for a device for work if I work on W2 in Brooklyn, NY? I am a physician assistant who wants to get an ultrasound device that is not reimbursed.

My employer does not reimburse this purchase, however, it is going to be used for work.

If you are a W-2 employee there is no business deduction for the machine.

Deductions for W2 job expenses have been suspended with the tax act for federal returns. Maybe deductible for some states.

Unless you are a 1099 independent contractor. Then you can deduct expenses on Schedule C.
