I had never been to the United States before, arrived on 2016 May 22 on an F-1 visa (student visa). However, I applied for my Green Card based on National Intrest Waiver (NIW-EB2) and received my Employment Authorization Document (EAD) on 08-14-2018 from official announcement of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Science then, I renewed my EAD card once and it will be valid till 02-26-20121. I am working for Auburn University and I was in Alabama and never left the US.
I wonder if I can fill the 1040 form for the 2019 tax year?
Please let me know if you need more information.
Thanks for your help.
If (and only if) you have a social security number, you can file the 1040. However, if you are a non-resident alien for 2019 (and I"m fairly sure you are) then you have to file the 1040-NR. TurboTax does not support the 1040-NR. Of that, you'll have to use www.sprintax.com
how can I make sure that I am RA or NRA? I was in the US, Alabama all year. I can pass the 183 days test for 2019.
So with an SSN, I would assume you received a W-2 showing the wages you were paid in 2019. That W-2 would (should) have your SSN on it. If all checks out, then you can file a normal 1040 with TurboTax.
@Hal_Al am I correct on my assumptions? Or am I forgetting something maybe?
