Can I file my taxes without saying how many taxes were withheld in 2020?

I don't know how many taxes were withheld in 2020. Can I file without that information?

Please clarify.

  • Do you have a W-2 from your employer? If you do, the federal tax withheld is in Box 2 and the state income tax withheld is in box 17.
  • Did you not get a W-2 from your employer and you want to file using your last paycheck stub?
  • Do you have a form 1099 NEC or 1099-MISC?
  • Are you self-employed?
  • What income are you reporting?

If you don't report the tax withheld, when the software calculates the amount due or refund, it will short you by the amount withheld. You'll wind up with a smaller refund or more likely a larger amount due.

You can get a transcript of your 2020 W-2 from the IRS.

Go to IRS.GOV

Click on GET YOUR TAX RECORD

Click on GET TRANSCRIPT ONLINE

The reason you need the transcript is FEDERAL TAX
