Can I enter personal notes within the TurboTax software program?

These notes wouldn't be included in any tax filings.  They're for my information when preparing the next year's return.

No, there is no place to include notes.

While this answered my question, I still feel it would be very helpful if TurboTax included the ability to record personal notes.  With every tax preparation I keep personal, background notes, to help me with preparing the next year's tax returns.  I'd like to have the ability to enter notes that are form-specific and notes that are more general.  And, to be able to print these notes separately.

Agree, pretty short sighted to not be able to do this to carry fwd personal notes each tax year, come on TT get with it.

It's a mystery that the designers of TurboTax did not envision the need subscribers would have for recording personal notes, reminders, etc. in the tax file itself. They would be infinitely more useful than scribbling notes on paper that would have no hope of being found, or shared. Get with it Intuit.

TurboTax is tax software not an accounting program.   There is nothing in TurboTax that  IRS forms do  not require.  There are several accounting programs on the market.   TurboTax is designed to file tax returns, not to keep notes.

However, most entries allow adding a "Supporting Information" box that allows brief notes.

I have TurboTax deluxe  for 2021.

Cannot activate supporting information box which is basically a note to self this year. Have done it for the last 30 years. How do I activate it this year on this version. Thank you for assistance.

Hi macuser I tried to bring up the supporting information box in deductions and credits which is basically a note to self as you have stated before. I can't activate it in the 2021 version of TurboTax deluxe how do I bring it up this year? I've done it for the last 30 years this is crazy. Thank you for your assistance. Bruce

Perhaps, since you have done this for some time, and it's not coming up for 2021 (assuming you are using the TurboTax CD/Download version), then there are two possible scenarios.  One is that the capability has been eliminated or two, more updates are needed.  The latter will be happening frequently during these early filing days.

As a reminder TurboTax does not support adding notes or statements that do not conform to any IRS standard form or statement.

We can alert @Macuser for additional information if applicable.

Exactly where in deductions & credits are you trying to do that?   Not all fields support that.

To add personal notes to turbo tax

  1. Open turbo tax.
  2. Click on 'Forms' in upper right blue banner.
  3. Select a form with few or no entries such as 'Other Income'.
  4. Click on a blank field such as 'Gambling winnings...'.
  5. This field will turn blue and reveal a 'Plus sign', '+' on the left side.
  6. Click on the Plus sign to open supporting details window.
  7. Click the 'Check this box to NOT print this supporting details'. (optional)
  8. Fill the description field with your notes.  In my case 'Broker corrected 1099 3/13/2023'.
  9. Fill the 'Amount' field with zero (0).
  10. This will preserve a private note in the turbo tax file.  Just remember where you put it.
