Can I deduct mileage? I am a construction worker but I work for myself.

Looking to see if I am allowed to deduct my mileage and a few tools I bought last year. I bought a couple ladders and compressors.

If you are in business for yourself, then you can deduct tools/equipment under a the Safe Harbor election or depreciate as assets if they don't meet the requirements.

You vehicle expenses are deductible also deductible if you use it business. You can take a standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses.

Under the business section, vehicle expenses are listed under the expense section. For the tools, begin in the asset section and you will be asked if you wish to make the Safe Harbor election for items costing less than $2,500.
