Can I claim the $6,000+ I have given my daughter during her extended illness to help maintain her family household this past year?

No, you can't deduct money that you gave your daughter, but you can check the requirements to determine if you are able to claim her as a qualifying relative if she meets the requirements below.

  • Income is less than $4,700
  • Parent's provided over half of her support
  • Not filing a joint tax return if married unless filing to claim a refund of withholding
  • Must be a US, citizen, US resident, US national or resident of Canada and Mexico
  • Parent(s) isn't a dependent on someone else's tax return.

Your daughter doesn't have to live with you to qualify as your qualifying relative. Refer to the TurboTax Help article Does a dependent for 2023 have to live with me?
