Can I claim my boyfriend if I have been providing support since August 20th? He was injured and has been out of work since.

We do expect to receive a settlement from the party at fault, but not sure when that will be.

Unless your BF lived with you for the entire year of 2021 and had LESS than $4350 of income not counting Social Security in 2021 you cannot claim him as a dependent.   You say he has only been out of work for several months so that sounds unlikely.

And all you would "get" for claiming him even if you could---would be the $500 credit for other dependents, so you are not missing out on much tax-wise.   When he receives his settlement and begins to earn income again, hopefully he will pay you back for the support you have provided
