Can I amend my 2020 Tax return to claim credit for my son who received SSN in Dec 2021

Hello,

My son (17 years old now) got a Social Security Number in Dec 2021. Can I amend my 2020 return to claim the child Tax credit of $3000 that is given to child with SSN (vs the $500 Tax credit that I received with his ITIN)?

Also can I claim the Covid stimulus #1 ($500) and stimulus #2 ($600) for my child that he did not receive when I do the amendment? Because the stimulus dollars was only given to people who had SSN numbers.

Thanks,

Umesh

Hello @umesh108 ,

Thank you for the question.

The IRS requires that the qualify child have a valid social security number, issued before the due date of the tax return. This is true for the child tax credit, as well as the Economic Impact (Covid stimulus) Payments.
