Can I amend 2 years back tax return with the itin generated this year

Dear Team,

My daughter was not with me during the enter year of 2018, she came to the US at the end of 2019 so I applied for ITIN for her with the 2020 returns. Couple of weeks back I got the ITIN number finally.

Question is, can I amend 2018 returns and claim Child tax credit of $500 with the new itin or can't I because the itin got created this year and not 2018.

Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

If the original poster meant Other Dependent Credit, still cannot claim for the years when the child did not have an ITIN.

No and you cannot claim child tax credit in any year with an ITIN.  The child must have a social security number to claim child tax credit.

You cannot get a social security number and use it to amend previous year's taxes.  The child must have had the social security number in the year that taxes were filed for.

Thank you, Grace.

Maybe it is not Child Tax Credit. It is the $500 dependent child credit that we get for a non ssn dependent child who has an ITIN. I know for a child born here in the US it is $2000 and requires SSN.
