Can a 17 year old claim himself when required to file his own return? Parents subject to AMT and get no benefit from the exemption on their federal return.

Child required to file return based on wages and unearned income.  He benefits from the exemption, parents do not.

The IRS rule is that if someone CAN claim him, he cannot claim himself.  Just because you do not want to claim him does not mean he can claim himself.  He still needs to say on his own return that he can be claimed on someone else's return.
