Hello,
Both my partner and I recently accepted new positions. Mine is remote, and his is in California. I want to go out there too, I don't know what to do in regards to my taxes.
My position is fully remote, from where I live and currently pay taxes out of state. We are currently contracted with a company in California, but I don't expect that assignment to last many months longer. My partner's job pays for his lodging however, it is a hotel. He does not have a permenant residence and does not expect to look for one. His company can, and has, sent him home to work remotely before. I will also not have a permenant residence and if he leaves, I would leave. They have not given him an estimate how long he will be in-person, but we are assuming it could be the rest of the year. I am planning to move out there by April.
Do I need to pay California taxes? I did ask my company, and they did not know. I assume I have to file next year in two states.
It sounds like you and your partner would file a California return as Part-Year Residents, if you only live there a short time. It's not relevant whether it's a hotel, etc. only that you were physically present in the state for a time, earning income.
Wherever you live the other portion the year, you may be considered Part-Year Residents there also.
