Calculating Income Tax When Filing Form 2350

My husband and I plan to the file Form 2350 for an extension in order to exclude foreign income on the basis of the physical presence test.

How do we calculate the income tax we should pay (box 5)?

After filling out our tax return on turbo tax, we would have expected to receive a rebate both on our federal and state taxes. Does that mean when we file form 2350 we do not need to pay an income tax and write $0?

Yes, if you expect a refund then you don't have to pay any income tax due with Form 2350 and you can write $0 or just leave blank.  This is because an extension is only an extension of time to file your return, not pay your income tax due.

If you want to, you can use the TurboTax TaxCaster to help estimate if you would have any tax due.  But, if you are confident that you will receive a refund, then its not necessary.
