I am working on my Federal taxes and am using Copy B of my W-2.
However, Box 15 shows "TOTAL STATE", Box 16 is blank, and Box 17 shows $5,331. There is no option to choose Total State in TT.
On Copy 2 of my W-2, Box 15 shows my state (IL), Box 16 shows $99596, and Box 17 shows $4930.
I am confused what I should enter. Again, this is for the Federal Tax section so I was using Copy B of my W-2.
By any chance did your employer have withholding done for you in two different states? Otherwise I don't have an explanation for Box 17 on Copy B showing $5,331 and the same box on Copy 2 showing $4930.
If there was a second state for withholding, then I would have thought that you would have received a second Copy 2, for the other state.
But you may have to go to your payroll people and ask them what this means.
I think I'll need to ask my payroll department about it. I only worked in Illinois, so no idea why they would withhold for two states for me.
My W2 form I have 'Copy B' to file with my Federal taxes, but I have three 'Copy 2's (one is my reference copy to keep, the other two have different amounts across multiple boxes). When I add up Boxes 16 and Boxes 17 from the two 'Copy 2' forms, they amount to what is showing on my Copy B.
I'm wondering if this is because part of my income was a bonus and maybe they treat that differently.
Is the box 15 for the two 'copy 2' forms both Illinois? Does one of the 'copy 2' forms appear to equal the bonus payment?
It may be that the amount has been segregated to report bonus income which is taxed at a higher rate. Contact your employer for an explanation.

If you reside in the state of Illinois, you are responsible for paying federal taxes on your bonus, in addition to Illinois state supplemental income tax withholdings.
