Box 6 - State number, has been left blank on the Form 1099-NEC Form that I received, but Turbo Tax will not proceed without it. Any help?

If boxes 5 and 7 show $0 then make sure you left them empty and didn't manually enter 0 on the form. Same thing happened to me and doing this let me e-file without needing to fill box 6.

If there was no state tax withheld (in Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, then please leave Box 6 and Box 7 empty.

If there was state tax withheld (in Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, and there is no state identification number in Box 6, then you can use the identification number as shown in the Payer's ITIN number Box under the Payer's name.

Thank you not entering a $0 amount in line 5 or 7 resolved the request in box 6 for a state abbreviation thus allowing me to e-file.

What if there is a number? Box 5 says 0, nothing in 6, and 7 has a dollar amount. But it won’t let me push my taxes through. I’m very confused.

@Justjewels I ended up just putting in the state even though it was blank on the 1099-NEC. I see you were advised to leave box 7 blank by an expert here. I felt it would be better to add a state that wasn't on the form than to change a number to 0 that would be easily caught by a computer.

What solution did you ultimately choose, and did you have any issues? My return was accepted by the state; so far so good.

I'm not sure if this is a mistake on the part of the employer company I did the work for (should have left box 7 blank if nothing was withheld), or a mistake in Turbotax (requiring a state when it can be blank). Maybe this time next year there will be some clarity.

Does your advice still apply for 2024 1099-NEC forms where no State # exists? I wonder why Turbotax makes it mandatory.

Even if box 6 has a state and box 7 has an amount in it?

Yes, the same advice is still valid today.  If there was no state tax withheld (Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, then please leave Boxes 6 and 7 empty.

If there was state tax withheld (Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, and there is no state identification number in Box 6, then you can use the Payer's TIN located right under the Payer's name.   @kal2023

Thanks for replying! In addition to your advice, I just saw a response from this year that states to enter the FED TIN for the payer in a case like mine where I have the state abbreviation in box 6 and my state income listed in box 7 but no withholding in box 5. In this case, would your advice or entering the TIN be better? If you are unsure, please express that as well.

If you had no state tax withheld on Box 5 of your 1099-NEC, you can leave Boxes 6 and 7 empty.

Thanks for seconding the answer. It looks like both are given out, so if one way doesn't work for me, I will try the other!
