At the end of the process, it says I'm not eligible for electronic filing because multiple lines are showing a zero balance. Why, and how do I fix it?

Most common 'fix' is to enter one dollar ($1) as Interest Income. Returns which show zero income and zero tax withheld generally can't be e-filed.

But I DID have income (SSA benefits).  Shouldn't I report it, even though I won't owe any money?  I did last year, here on Turbo Tax.  It worked then.

If your only income is SS benefits, then you have zero taxable income, and thus are normally ineligible to e-file. '$1 Interest' technique I mentioned previously usually works to enable e-filing; however, you are not required to file by IRS without any taxable income.

I am not sure where you are seeing these $0 lines.  Many lines have a trashcan icon to the right where you can delete lines of data entry.

You may also have to delete forms with the Delete a Form tool.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
  • Then click on Tools.
  • Then in the center of the page, click on Delete a Form.
  • Choose the form to be delete and click Delete to the right of the form(s).

To enter interest income, follow these steps:

  • Click on Federal.
  • Click on Wages & Income.
  • Under Your Income, choose Interest and Dividends.
  • Choose Interest on 1099-INT.
