If you have received one or more 1099-NEC forms you are considered self-employed by the IRS.  To enter this income (and appropriate business expenses) in TurboTax Online, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  2. Search for self employment income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen

You can also see What self-employed expenses can I deduct? to make sure you report all the business expenses you are allowed.

Thanks, but that does not answer my question. Is there no longer an expense category entitled "Income returns and refunds"?  For use in cases where the independent contractor received income which returned to the client.

Returns and allowances are entered in you self-employment Schedule C in the income section. If you have money that you returned to your customer(s) you should enter that as a return using the 'Add income for this work'.

  1. Sign into your TurboTax Online account
  2. Select Income & Expenses > Self-employment income and expenses > Edit beside your business
  3. Scroll to Income > Add income for this work > Rebates and refunds, includes any income returned to customers
  4. Enter your Description and Amount.
  5. See the image below.
