As an active police officer, can I write off the purchase of a duty weapon? If so, how do I estimate the amount I will get back on taxes?

As an employee who receives a form W-2 your employee business expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return due to the changes in the tax code in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.

No.

A duty weapon isn't tax deductible.

Up to tax year 2017, job-related expenses were deductible as an itemized deduction subject to the 2% of AGI floor.

Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, itemized deductions for job-related expenses subject to the 2% of AGI floor are suspended for expenses incurred after December 31, 2017 through 2025.
