As a senior citizen, why was I hooked with promised low costs and then hit with over $100 in fees on a return for a person with less than $14,000 in income?

Surprised that a product advertised as including state taxes, then hit me with an additional $39.99 fee for it.  I paid a total of $104.98 before I realized what was happening, but found no existing CUSTOMER SERVICE to get a refund before I filed the return.  The system is rigged to get more money and make it hard to correct any problem leading to excessive charges.  Is this really legal, never mind ethical!

Under the new Federal  tax law, there are no more Forms 1040-EZ or 1040-A.  Everyone uses Form 1040, with one or more new schedules.  Depending upon which schedules you need, you may be required to upgrade. Your age and the amount of your income are not the only considerations; it is also the type of income and your deductions and credits.

You are asking from TT Premier. This is generally used for Forms 1099-B, K-1, or rental income.
