Amending state return due to unemployment exclusion

I filed my son's returns a few weeks ago, before they announced the Federal unemployment pay exclusion, which affects him. I know that the IRS is telling people not to file an amended return and that they will automatically process refunds where called fo. However, his adjusted AGI has a direct effect on our state taxes, and the state can't do anything automatically since they just start with the AGI and don't know the details. So I guess I'll have to file an amended state return to get his money back, although I'll probably wait a while until after the regular filing season is over since they probably haven't even processed the original return that we sent in.

Any comments? There must be more than a few in the same boat.

Millions of people are in this situation.  It would be best to wait while the IRS and the states sort it out.

I’m in the same boat...
Actually, I thought that I switched the toggle to avoid e-filing the state return, but, I just received a deposit in my bank account for my CT State Return which doesn’t include the unemployment taxes. So, I’m assuming that I will have to amend as well although TurboTax online is not allowing amendments as of yet because they are waiting to get updates on how to proceed with situations like this.
I guess I’m going to have to wait for updates in order to move forward.

The latest here in Michigan is that we should not file an amended return yet while they decide what to do. It's possible that they might provide a simpler way to do it without having to do a full amended return.
