Amending a 2023 Tax Return

Having to amend my 2023 tax return, to date I have not received this tax refund yet. After months of IRS extensions, and reviews, it came down to a simple error. I loaded an erroneous travel W2 from an incorrect year in the amount of $2500. This was not enough to change my overall tax bracket. It did change my refund amount of an estimated $7400 to $7200. However, when correcting the 1040X, it now says I have to pay $266. Why? Why am I having to pay this $266, when I haven't received my initial refund for that year? Why wouldn't the corrected amount just be sent when this amended return is finally sent to me?

When you prepare the amended return, you should have been asked for the overpayment as shown on the original return or as previously adjusted by the IRS. You should enter $0 for that amount if the IRS adjusted your refund so that you didn't receive it:
