Amended return help

I had to file an amended return for my 2022 income taxes.  My refund amount was to be $1400.  I realized that I  failed to include a 1099-DIV and a 1099-R on the original return.  While attempting to file an amended return, Turbo Tax Step-by-step shows that I owe $1121 on the amended return.  However, when I look at the actual 1040 form, it shows a refund of $299.  The $299 number is the correct one.  When I begin to attempt electronic filing, Turbo Tax shows that I owe $1121. I'm confused and would greatly appreciate any explanation I can get.

That's the amount of your original refund, that you have to send back to the IRS.

Thanks, but I guess I wasn't clear.  I caught my error before IRS paid my refund

You should never amend a return until the originally e-filed and accepted return has been processed by the IRS. Most likely, you will still receive the original refund. If so, you'll have to turn around and send back the over-payment to the IRS.

What I would suggest, is that if you have not received your original refund by Apr 15th, you go ahead and pay the amount on the amended return. You can do that online at www.irs.gov/payments.

Otherwise, if the IRS sends you only the amount on the amended return (highly unlikely, but not impossible) then you do nothing.

Carl

Thank you very much for your help.  I retrospect, the answer was pretty obvious, but I couldn't wrap my head around it at the time.

Hey, we all have the occasional "brain burp" from time to time. 🙂
