Question: should I file an amended return for 2021?
Background: Filed return using Turbo Tax in Feb. Return indicated ~2K$ overpayment. Filed return had an inadvertent error. I placed the same tax payment as both my 2Q21 payment, and as the tax paid portion of an RMD. I just misunderstood the TT software. In March I got an IRS letter identifying the mistake, and requesting and additional $600 to fix the double counting of the same payment. I agreed and paid the $600, all before the April filing deadline. So the money is right, but my actual filed return is wrong. So, do I need to file an amended return, or is the IRS letter identifying my error enough?
Hello WLL1,
Hope you're doing great!
So if IRS letter identified the error on your return and it has been corrected by you sending the additional amount required, you don't need to file an amended return. Just keep all the documents in one place, in case something comes up in the future and you wanted to figure out what had happened. It is good idea to keep your records for at least 3 years or more.
