Am I supposed to check “nonresident alien or dual-status alien spouse” if I’m a resident alien for tax purposes?

Hi, I’m an international student, but I’ve been in the U.S. long enough to be considered a resident alien for tax purposes (I passed the Substantial Presence Test). While using TurboTax, there’s a checkbox that says: “I am a nonresident alien or dual-status alien spouse.” Should I check this box? Or should I leave it unchecked since I’m filing as a resident alien? Just want to make sure I’m doing this correctly. Thanks!

If you were a resident for ALL of 2024, then you would not check that box.

If you became a resident after January 1st, you would check that box and would need to file as a dual status resident.  This means you would also need to file a form 1040NR in addition to the 1040. TurboTax does not support the 1040NR, but our partner Sprintax does and can help with your non resident return.
