2024 maryland 502 program doesn't allow me to check direct debit even though I have checked efile

Maryland worksheet line PtV11 Direct deposit or withdrawal will not allow me to check "direct debit of state payment". 

Error message reads "box should not be checked . Only efile returns are eligible" .

I have checked efile.

Additional info:  my Federal return is checked for "apply refund to next year's taxes; whereas the State return is a payment due.   Is there a misconnect between the federal program and the state program?
