I was single in 2019 and paper filed the tax (single). IRS states that my 2019 tax return is still processing. I got married in 2020 and we are now filing jointly our 2020 tax return electronically thru turbotax. Will 2019 tax processing impact and delay in getting our return for 2020? Most people got their return in 2-4weeks once they file it thru turbotax. My spouse is eligible for AOTC and he is claiming it and I don't want my 2019tax delay issue messes with my spouse getting what he deserves. People suggest to put my spouse 2019 AGI only (considering my AGI as "0") as my IRS is still processing my 2019 tax. Is that a correct way to do it? How can we avoid delay in our 2020 tax returns and AOTC? Thank you.
Please see the link below for guidance since you are filing together this year.
Also, since your return is still processing, you may need to use zero for your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) as the IRS would not have any information on file yet to match to.
The delay in processing your 2019 tax return should not affect your filing of your 2020 income tax return.
