2017 rejection

My 2017 taxes were rejected and I can't figure out why or what I need to do to refile and move forward.

Any rejection of an e-filed tax return either from the IRS or a State, you receive an email from TurboTax giving you the rejection code and a reason for the rejection.  You will receive this email provided that you have the correct email address for your TurboTax account.

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

A 2017 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

Print, sign, date and mail the tax return to the IRS.  Include with the mailed return any forms W-2 and 1099 which have taxes withheld.  Go to this IRS website for mailing addresses - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

There are no penalties for filing a tax return after the due date if filing for a tax refund or there are no taxes owed.

Thank you, i looked up the code, and it was IND-031-04. for incorrect AGI from previous year. how do I look up the AGI from 2016 and then how to do update my 2017 return and resubmit?

You do not need the 2016 AGI for the 2017 tax return.  That is only needed if you were e-filing the return and as stated you can only print and mail the 2017 tax return.  E-filing is not available for any prior year tax return.

I guess then I am confused as to why the return was rejected in the first place.  How do I go about finding out what was wrong?

Turbo Tax stated I would receive a $4 refund, but now I have a letter from the IRS stating that I owe $10,000. Is that simply because technically my 2017 return was never accepted?

Since the 2017 tax return was never received by the IRS they compute your taxes owed only based on the information received from other sources.

The IRS database may well have incorrect information concerning the 2016 AGI from the 2016 tax return received according to your Social Security number and name.

IND-031-04: The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records

Thank you, that makes me feel better.

If the IRS has incorrect data, then how can I ensure that they have the correct data when I resubmit my return so I do not receive this error code again?

They don't need to check your 2016 AGI anymore.  When you print and mail a return they accept it.   The AGI is just used to verify who you are.   What about your 2018 return?  Did you file it?  Was it accepted?  If you didn't file a 2017 return (because it was rejected) then your 2018 maybe rejected also.  Better double check 2018.

There is no way to ensure the IRS database for a prior year AGI is correct.  For years you can e-file a tax return using the prior year AGI with no problems and then suddenly the IRS will reject the a tax return for an AGI.

The rejection codes provided with an e-file rejection would be helpful to diagnose your issue.
