1099 R

I am doing my mother's taxes. She had a stroke and my brother and I are her powers of attorneys.  She lived in Kansas and her bank that received the RMD is in Kansas. Her mailing address was changed to Oklahoma where my brother lives, so her 1099-R has OK for the state tax withheld. I am filing her taxes in Kansas.  I talked to JP Morgan who are the payer's on the 1099-R and they say to call the retirement company to get myself put on account as power of attorney, then they could file a corrected form.  Would it be legal if I just filed an OK state tax also and not go through the correction?

You'll need to file two state tax return with federal tax return for your mother. Oklahoma non-resident tax return and Kansas resident tax return. Do Kansas state return first, then to do non resident state return follow these steps

  1. With your return open, select My Info in the left-hand menu.
  2. Then, on the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
  3. At the Did you make money in any other states? ...
  4. Select Continue to return to your Personal info summary and answer the following questions.
