1099-R - Box 16 State Distribution

Hi, I'm inputting my 1099-R information into TurboTax Deluxe 2024. On my 1099-R form, it lists box 16 for State Distribution as empty. When I leave this blank in TurboTax, I receive this message, "State distribution amount can't be blank and can't be less than state tax withheld". My state tax withheld for box 14 is, $215.78. My total Taxable amount in box 2a is $4315.67.

How should I proceed? Thank you in advance for any help on this.

Enter the taxable amount in your 1099-R for the state amount. This should allow you to proceed. Each state is different so review your state return when finished. You can see the state return with the instructions below or you can print it before you file.

From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the pop-up menu titled “Tools Center”, select View Tax Summary
  4. On the left sidebar, select Preview my 1040

For TurboTax Desktop, change to 'Forms' and review the forms

When I do this, it then says I have an extra tax bill of $432. Why is this, I had taxes taken out when I withdrew this money to begin with?

Tax withheld is just an estimated advance payment of your taxes. The final tax amount can only be determined when you fill out your tax return. The taxes withheld serve as a credit against your tax liability. If too much tax was withheld, you'll receive a refund; otherwise, there'll be a tax due.
