If this form does not apply to you, you can simply remove it from the program.  Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online version:

1.  Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off

2.  Select Tax Tools, click on the drop down arrow

3.  Select Tools

4.  Under Other helpful links, choose Delete a form

5.  Select Delete next to Form 1099-NEC and Continue with My Return

One of the most common reasons you’d receive tax form 1099-NEC (Form 1099-MISC in prior years) is if you're self-employed or did work as an independent contractor during the previous year. The IRS refers to this as “nonemployee compensation.”

  • In most circumstances, your clients are required to issue Form 1099-NEC when they pay you $600 or more in any year.
  • As a self-employed person, you're required to report your self-employment income if the amount you receive from all sources totals $400 or more.

I’ve done this per your directions and it still won’t let me past it.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you cannot delete Form 1099-NEC from your return, or are you experiencing some other issue?

Please add further details so that someone may be able to give some assistance.

I am trying to enter my 1099-NEC information and TurboTax won’t let me. I get a message saying

“The Non-Employment Compensation Area will be ready soon.  You’ve done a great job staring your taxes early, but the IRS is still working on finishing up the non employee compensation area (Form 1099-NEC) for 2021. That means the area isn’t quite ready yet.  Check back soon and we’ll help you finish up.”

It is April 8, 2021 and the deadline is fast approaching and I need to get this solved to submit my taxes.

please fix or provide troubleshooting.

The Form 1099-NEC was reintroduced for nonemployee compensation in 2020.  It's causing a few difficulties randomly. You should delete the Form 1099-NEC, then enter the income directly following steps below.

Here's the general procedure for viewing the forms list and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

As far as recording your income, you do not have to enter the Form 1099-NEC directly. It's a convenience but not a requirement. Follow the steps below to enter your business income (it is not 'Other' income).  This will allow you to complete your return without error.  Keep this document with your tax files.

You can also choose to enter this as a cash payment of business income by selecting Other self-employed income, includes 1099-K, cash, and checks (if you choose this, delete the 1099-NEC).
