1099-NEC State Number Error

Hi!

So I received a 1099-NEC from a client and it lists the state abbreviation (no number) in Box 6 but it keeps saying error for the state number which isn't listed on the 1099. I've left Box 4 and 5 blank as I've read you're not suppose to put 0. I asked the client if they could provide the state number but they said they've never had to provide it before. I do have info in box 7 though. Would love to know how to fix this so I can file my taxes. Thanks in advance!

Simply enter the federal EIN without any dashes and it should allow you to proceed without error.

Where can I lookup the federal EIN number? It's for the state of Indiana.

If you do not have a federal EIN in box Payer's TIN then you should not enter the 1099-NEC and just enter the income in your self employment schedule under income type Other.

  • Search for schedule c > Press enter  > click the Jump to... link in the search results

In this case delete the 1099-NEC.

I have this situation currently. Did you end up entering the FED TIN for the payer if you had 1 listed at top of NEC form or did you delete the NEC because you didn't have a FED TIN to enter? I'm curious to know which of his advice worked for you.

The payer's TIN will work in the State/Payer's state no. box.   Don't enter the dash; use numbers only.  @kal2023

I entered the Federal I.D Number and it still marked it as an error. It says the state number must be 14 characters.

Hmmm not sure why it's saying you need 14 characters. I used my Payer's TIN number which is 9 numbers and it worked and IRS approved it.

Clarification Which state do you live in?  Which state is on your W2?

I have this same issue (payer's state number has 9 characters but Turbotax is saying it needs 14), would love some help on this.

If your form 1099-NEC doesn't have any information on boxes 5 and 7, and all it has is the state abbreviation, then don't enter anything for box 6.  If you had an amount on Box 5 for state withholding, you can either enter the Payer's TIN, or contact the company that issued the form and get the state identification number.

Box 5 has nothing, but there's a number in box 7. Do I need to enter the boxes 5-7 information then? The payer's TIN is not working, with or without the hyphen (It's the same number as what's in box 6). I keep getting this error.

You can leave boxes 5 through 7 blank, it won't affect your state tax return.
