I received a 1099-MISC from a bank which mentioned the following (everything else was empty):
3. Other income $50
4. Federal income tax withheld $12
Description of this income was mentioned in the 1099-MISC as following: "MARKETING AND MORTGAGE PROMOTIONS SWEEPSTAKES, PRIZES, BOOKS OR APOLOGY CREDITS"
I imported this 1099-MISC directly from my bank, and it's details got added at this location: Federal >> Wages & Income >> Other Common Income >> Form 1099-MISC
Description of this 1099-MISC is also added to my return (TurboTax asks for this), as seen here:
However, prior to submitting the tax filing, in the preview PDF shown to me, the above description (i.e. "MARKETING AND MORTGAGE PROMOTIONS SWEEPSTAKES, PRIZES, BOOKS OR APOLOGY CREDITS") is not mentioned anywhere. Instead, the 1099-MISC description is mentioned as follows:
Schedule 1 (Form 1040):
Statement at the end of the PDF:
(The second entry here is not relevant to this question as it's for a hobby income I made)
Why isn't the details of the 1099-MISC mentioned, such as the description that I had entered in TurboTax ? The 1099-MISC form being referenced also isn't included in the PDF bundle.
What category did you choose on the page titled Does one of these uncommon situations apply? Did you enter both amounts when you entered the form? You won't see your description printed - you should see Other Income from Box 3 of 1099-misc.
You may need to delete it and re-enter it.
Hi @DawnC, I'm not following what you're saying. What are you referring to as 'both' amounts ? If it's the amounts I mentioned earlier for boxes 3 and 4, then yes I entered both of them. In fact, here's the data for the 1099-MISC that's entered so far:
Regarding the uncommon situations, I chose 'None of these apply':
So then why is the description not stated anywhere in my return ?
In this case, the description isn't reported on your return. Just 'Other income from 1099-Misc' as in the screenshot @dawn posted. The IRS does document matching; they get a copy of your 1099-Misc, and as long as the income is reported, they're not concerned with the description.
had the same in 2023 for some brokerage promotions. I wouldn't spend time worrying about this, I don't think it matters that level of description detail doesn't make it, as long as it hits Schedule 1, just keep the detail if audited.
Generally 1099s are not sent to IRS in your return, just totals on Schedule B, D etc - they already have the 1099s.
@MarilynG1 / @DawnC, you said "In this case, the description isn't reported on your return". Just for my knowledge can you explain what's causing for the description to NOT show up ? .. In which cases does the description show up ?
The description that you enter on Form 1099-misc will show up as the description of the type of work your business does on Schedule C - but since this is not self-employment income, Schedule C does not get generated. So, it is just Other Income on Schedule 1.
The description you enter will show up on Line 8 if you used the Other Reportable Income entry, but since you received the 1099-misc for this, you would not use that entry line either.
@DawnC so then that means that given what I'm entering for the 1099-MISC, it's fine and expected that the info from the 1099-MISC is generating the way I described, part of which is the description not showing up in the final return PDF ?
