1099-G (Total of all your payments and withholding)

My 2020 1099-G says “Box 2 is for 2019”

The help portion in Turbotax mentions state OR locality.

My 2019 W2 has box 17 and box 19 filled in. Do I add them both or only box 17?

Box 20 says CA SDI.

Do I only fill in the 2019 W2 information?

Thank you.

From the Turbox Tax help file:

Add up any payments you made to your state or locality, along with any state or locality withholdings from the previous tax year, including:

 - Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099
 - Estimated tax payments for 2019
  - Add any paid in 2020 for 2019 (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment to be made in January)
 - Overpayment from 2018 applied toward your 2019 return
 - Payments made with an extension of time to file
 - Payments made when you filed your return
 - Refundable credits

You can find most of this info on your 2019 state tax return.

Enter the total amount of all of these combined here.

Yes, state AND local HOWEVER

You can use the amounts from your income producing tax documents, but there is an easier (and better) way.

Look at your 2019 1040 line 9. Did you Take the Standard Deduction or Itemize?

If you took the Standard Deduction, the 1099-G is NOT taxable, it is NOT reported.

If you Itemized, look at your 2019 Schedule A. Did you claim State Income Tax or State Sales Tax? Is Box 5a checked on the 2019 Schedule A?

If Box 5a on the Schedule A IS checked, you claimed State Sales tax (not State Income Tax) and the state refund is NOT taxable, it is NOT reported.

If Box 5a on the Schedule A IS NOT checked, you claimed State Income Tax and the state refund MAY BE taxable.

Use the amount listed on line schedule A line 5d as total taxes paid.

If TurboTax is asking about entries for the Refund Worksheet:

Item Q line 1 is found on the previous year’s Schedule A line 5b

Item Q line 2 is found on the previous year’s Schedule A line 5c

KrisD15,

Thank you. Some articles say I should enter in the info if 5a is not checked.

Edit — But the article is misleading. TurboTax asked a lot of questions and agreed with you. 👍

Ok, this confuses me, and I just want to clarify:

- Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099

Does this just mean boxes 2, 4, and 6 on the W-2 (plus whatever is on the W-2G and 1099)?

- Estimated tax payments for 2019

Does this mean how much I paid in taxes? (is Federal included, or is this just Oregon?)

- Payments made when you filed your return

Is this the tax payment made to Oregon?

Thanks,

To clarify, do you owe taxes this year for both federal and state taxes and trying to figure an estimated tax schedule or filing an extension for 2022? What are you trying to do?
