1098-T. Turbotax is rejecting the Filer's Zip Code as invalid for Electronic Filing, but we are using the zip code on the 1098-T for the University. Any suggestions?

Double check your entries on the Form 1098-T.  It is possible that you entered the zip code correctly, but the state may be incorrect.

If everything is correct, try looking up an alternate address for the school to see if there is perhaps another zip code listed, or use the following link to check the zip code associated with the address on the Form 1098-T:  Look up a ZIP Code

The Zip code on the 1098-T is the same zip code for the University on USPS.com and yet, the transmission is rejected.  What can I do?

Not helpful if you live abroad. Although Turbotax for 2019 allows you to specify a foreign address, it doesn't let you submit your foreign zipcode and seems to want to force you to enter a US zipcode! :(

You have a foreign address on a 1098-T form ?

  1. Enter a US address
  2. Pay with a US -bank credit card
  3. Change your address to what you want on Form 1040.

I'm encountering the same issue for my son's tax returns.  He goes to school at MSU in Bozeman, MT.  The zip code for the entire university is 59717, but Turbo Tax (TT) will not accept the zip code and, consequently, will not allow me to file my TT return.

Any suggestions?  Did you ever find a solution?

Thank you.

@MBinCDA

You may receive a message like:

ZIP code is invalid for Electronic Filing. You must enter a valid ZIP code for your state. Enter a correct ZIP code in this format 'nnnnn' or 'nnnnn-nnnn'

TurboTax follows the IRS guidelines for acceptable ZIP codes. If the two-letter state abbreviation doesn't match the ZIP code, you'll receive this error when attempting to e-file.

This is failing for my daughter's as well - it would appear that Turbo-Tax doesn't have the correct information in this database that allows us to e-File. What now? I've looked it up with the USPS link and have the correct info in both 5 digit & 9 digit format - still asks to be corrected.

@Skipvw

Go back to the form and check the state entered. It is usually the problem when the zip is wrong.

OK ... use ANY city/state/zip combination that will work even if it is from your own address since this is nothing the IRS even look at ... they only look at the EIN number.

@Skipvw and all the future people with this problem. This is what worked for me. I deleted the student information. Then I uploaded the 1098-T document. It asked to confirm the state and zip and I did so and didn't have any problems from there. After uploading the 1098T I didn't have to do a worksheet that I previously had to do. Then I just went back to 'Review' and I was able to electrically file. And avoided the annoying mail filing option! Good luck
