Why would I not receive a 1099-S after I sold my primary home last year? Who would have sent it to me?

I sold my primary home last year and received an ALTA Settlement Statement - Seller, but did not receive a 1099-S.  Do I need the 1099-S?

This is fairly common on the sale of the personal residence to NOT get a 1099S.

You can still report the gross sales price without a 1099S in TurboTax.

The closing agent is the one who should have issued the 1099S.

All you really need is the date of the sale and the gross sales price to report the sale of the home.

Please note that you do not need to enter or report the sale of your primary residence if:

  • You never used your primary residence as a rental or took home office deduction
  • You have a loss on the sale of your home (Personal capital losses are not reported on your tax return)
  • You did not receive a Form 1099-S and
  • You meet the home gain exclusion (see below)
