Why did my New York State Tax Return ask me to check yes or no in the box if the IRS is computing my EIC. I don't get the EIC this year?

By answering this, you're telling the program how to complete certain EIC information on your state return.

According to the Instructions for Form IT-201, if the IRS is computing your federal EIC, you'd write "EIC" in the box to the left of the money column of line 65, and leave the money column blank on line 65. You'd also need to complete lines 67 through 75 of Form IT-201, but leave lines 76 through 80 blank.

The programming reflects these actions.

Answer "no".

The IRS will calculate EIC for taxpayers who don't or can't calculate it for themselves.  (This mostly applies to people filing on paper since all the major software programs calculate it for the taxpayer.). If you filed this way, you would check that box for NY so that NY will know that they have to calculate the NY EIC for you.

Since Turbotax calculates your EIC for you, the IRS is not computing it, so check "no."
